Many G.I. Joes are getting discharged
A director has finally been found for Paramount’s G.I. Joe 2 in Jon Chu (here), and casting can now begin. We’ve already heard that a couple of actors most likely be returning (here), and it seems that many others won’t return either. A tweet by Rachel Nichols (Shana Scarlett’ O’Hara) reveals that only three characters will be returning: Duke (Channing Tatum), Snake Eyes (Ray Park), and Storm Shadow (Lee Byung-hun), who’s already finalized his deal (here). So, there will be no Cobra Commander (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Destro (Christopher Eccleston) Ripcord (Marlon Wayans), Heavy Duty (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), or anyone else.
No reason was given for this drastic change, but we can likely speculate it was due to money issues. While The Rise of Cobra did indeed gross enough ($300 million) to make this sequel, it was in no way as successful (money wise)Â as Michael Bay’s Transformers or Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. However, that’s only speculation.
So, how do you make a G.I. Joe movie without the Cobra Commander?
