Jon Chu talks G.I. Joe: Retaliation
One of the many complaints about Stephen Sommers’ G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was the depiction of Cobra Commander. Many were upset by the character’s look/portrayal. But one thing the trailer showed us that Jon Chu will be giving us the Cobra Commander we all know, at least in terms of the character’s appearance. And with Joseph Gordon-Levitt not returning, Chu mentioned that we’ll be in for a different take on the character:
“No. [Smiling] But we figured out a way that’s pretty nice. And you get the Cobra Commander that you’ve always wanted. Or, to me, what I always wanted: a bad-ass villain. He’s one of the most iconic villains ever. I’m even following him on Twitter — he’s so funny,” Chu said when asked if the character will be the same as in the previous film.
“Yeah, definitely, no doubt. That and no lips on Snake Eyes. And no laser guns. And as much real, physical stunts as we can. I don’t want to shoot on a green screen. Of course we had to do some green screen, but, for the most part, we got to shoot a lot of practical stunts,” Chu said on how the film will be different from Sommer’s film.
I was really puzzled when I first heard that Chu was directing this film, and it really took away from my anticipation. However, after the trailer, I’m really convinced this will be the film that fans have been asking for. Hopefully, it doesn’t disappoint on when its released on June 9th.
