James Franco as The Night Stalker
Don’t get all pissy thinking this Night Stalker is the Kolchak Night Stalker. No, James Franco isn’t replacing Darren McGavin, but instead he’ll play Richard Ramirez, who the LA police and media dubbed “The Night Stalker” in mid-1980s. The serial killer was interested in Satanism and the occult, often listening to AC/DC music prior to his murders.
This new film, will be produced by Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell, which will be based on Philip Carlo’s true crime novel. Nicholas Constantine, who wrote the screenplay, said, “Phil Carlo painted such an amazing portrait of Richard Ramirez, the human being, and it’s that which drew us all to the project. Sure, Ramirez was a monster — but Phil investigated how he became that monster, and that’s what this film is about. This isn’t a horror film (of course not), nor does it glorify Ramirez in any way,” Constantine said. “James Franco shares that vision, and we all agree that he is absolutely the one actor, and now director, who can truly do this very intense role and story justice.”
There’s been numerous DTV films on Ramirez already, so do you all think the 127 Hours star has what it takes to play him?

The 2002 film entitled NIGHTSTALKER was simply atrocious! This can’t be any worse.
Franco is great choice, i’m interested.
Serial killer movies I think are tricky thanks to the over-saturation in the DTV market. It needs a great angle. Franco is an okay choice. I hope they either focus more on his trail or his early life, both which would provide for some great drama.
Ramirez is still in San Quentin. I wouldn’t mind if they took a “Bronson” approach to the film. Ramirez is wild; he had groupies at the trail, too!
