Jackson will be “adding a lot of characters” to The Hobbit
It’s not unknown for writers to make changes to the source material when adapting a book, a comic book, or video-game to film. However, we’ve already heard that Peter Jackson will be bringing back some of the original cast members from his famous Lord of the Rings Trilogy (here, here, here, and here). Many of those actors are portraying characters that aren’t featured in Tolkein’s novel. However, Saiorse Ronan told the Los Angeles Times that Jackson will be adding “adding a lot of characters” that also weren’t featured in the book. But Ronan still refused to divulge her character’s identity.
Other than Frodo (Elijah Wood), Saruman (Christopher Lee), and possibly Legolas (Orlando Bloom), it’s unknown who he’ll be adding. But some of these additions are being made as to help connect the film to Lord of the Rings. One character we haven’t heard is returning or not is Elrond (Hugo Weaving), who shelters Bilbo (Marin Freeman) and the Dwarves during their journey, but hopefully we hear something about that soon. These additions have made many worried that Jackson is trying to too hard to connect the film, but others aren’t worried one bit as Jackson has shown to be able to handle Tolkein’s stories already. Hopefully, The Hobbit will be on the same level as Lord of the Rings, and worth the time it took to begin shooting.
The Hobbit, Part I opens on December of 2012.
