Gareth Edwards talks Godzilla
Gareth Edwards (Monsters) was recently attached to direct Legendary Pictures’ upcoming Godzilla reboot (here), and would be re-writing the script with an unknown writer. Nothing has been heard from the director since, but the London Evening Standard was able to get a few words from Edwards about the project. “I am attached and we are just starting the process. Everyone involved knows what the film has to be. What’s important to me is that, as well as spectacle, you have to give a shit about what’s happening and why” he said when asked about what monster Godzilla would likely fight in the movie.
It doesn’t tell us much, but it does let us know that Edwards has an understanding of the process. Many were skeptical about the news of his involvement due to his lack of directing experience, but may be an unknown director is what this film needs instead of going with one of Hollywood’s trendy directors. This new film will of course have a big budget, which Edwards isn’t experienced with just yet, but he does understands the process the film needs. The last attempt Hollywood made with a Godzilla film was with Roland Emmerich, which many fans remember didn’t turn out well at all. Fans obviously don’t want a repeat of that film.
As for whatever monster that will be Godzilla’s foe, we can probably expect to see one of Toho’s popular characters like King Ghidorah. Although, the writers could be coming up with a new monster or just re-use Yoshimitsu Banno’s idea he was planning for his 3D IMAX Godzilla film. After all, this project originated from that film. Hopefully, we get something official, but it likely won’t be soon seeing as how they’re still writing the script.
