Gareth Edwards promises to get Godzilla right
It’s been over a decade since Roland Emmerich made that embarrassingly bad Godzilla remake in 1998, but that hasn’t stopped many from getting nervous about this Legendary Pictures’ upcoming reboot. Gareth Edwards (Monsters) was recently attached to direct the film (here), and has been met with skepticism from fans. Edwards has only directed one film, and isn’t experienced with a big-budget film the film will require. This has led many to believe this film could be a repeat of the 1998 remake.
Shock Til You Drop was able to interview Edwards while promoting Monsters on DVD/Blu-ray, and is quite aware of what of the pressure of getting this film right. “I guess I will say I’m highly aware – and everyone involved is incredibly aware – of everyone’s opinions on what this film has to do and what it has to be. And no one will do anything but the right thing. Without addressing anything specific, everyone knows how important is to get it right,” he said. While Emmerich’s Godzilla remake was enjoyable as a guilty pleasure, it was far from what a true Godzilla film should have been. Legendary Pictures have a good record soo far with reboot like Batman Begins, and hopefully Godzilla can get the same respect. And judging by recent information by the film’s producer Brian Rogers (here), the film will take Godzilla back to his(?) roots as a nuclear menace.
