Gareth Edwards not directing Monsters 2
Gareth Edwards’ low-budget films Monsters has gained a lot of critical praise (and you can read Donny’s review here), and Vertigo films is likely to be moving forward on a sequel. However, they will have to do so without Gareth Edwards. Dread Central spoke with the director, and revealed that he doesn’t want to direct the sequel. “Vertigo owns the rights to Monsters, and I know they’re keen to move forward with another Monsters-related project very soon. I’m not sure how involved I can be right now, and I don’t think my next film really should be a sequel just yet. I’d like to do something else first, but I would definitely be open to returning at some point,” he said.
Instead, Edwards will be focusing his time on another monster movie, Legendary Pictures’ upcoming Godzilla reboot. Edwards was named director last month (here), and wants to focus his time on getting that film right. It’s really too early to talk a lot about Godzilla, but I am very confident in Legendary Pictures’ belief that we need to make the best film we possibly can,” said Edwards. “This will definitely have a very different feel than the most recent US film, and our biggest concern is making sure we get it right for the fans because we know their concerns. It must be brilliant in every category because I’m a fan as well,” he said. Given the way fans still feel about Roland Emerich’s remake, it’s best Edwards makes sure he gets it right. But Edwards believes the film is in “great hands”, and Legendary Pictures is the “right” studio for Godzilla.
