Elijah Wood to return for The Hobbit

The Hobbit will be filled with new faces such as Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins (here), but there will also be some old ones. Cate Blanchet has already been confirmed to reprise her role as Galadriel (here), with Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis possibly returning in their respective roles. However, it was revealed before the Holidays that Orlando Bloom could be return (here) as Legolas, a character that doesn’t appear in Tolkein’s novel.

Now, Deadline Hollywood is hearing that Elijah Wood could POSSIBLY be returning as Frodo Baggins. Tolkein fans know that Frodo never appears in The Hobbit, but Jackson could be trying to bridge the films together by added in old characters. Tolkein did give Frodo a history that could leave the character open for a cameo, and we could see the beginning of Frodo and Bilbo’s relationship that was more explored in the extended versions of Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Although, it should be noted Deadline has only been hearing conversations about Wood returning. If he decides to return or not, the decision will have to be made quickly as production is looking to begin next month.

Another issue that many have been wondering is about the cost of production. The film will have a production cost of $500 million, and MGM would have to put up around half. However, Deadline reports in the same article that Warner Bros. will be paying the full cost of production for both films. This shouldn’t be too surprising as MGM probably still needs more time to get that much, and WB wants to get these films made as soon as possible.

Update: The One Ring.net is getting word that Frodo WILL appear in The Hobbit. You can read the specifics at the link, but you can consider them to be spoilerish.

  1. I found Frodo to be annoying at times in the LOTR series.
