Edwards talks about his Godzilla reboot
Monsters was a festival and critical hit, a no budget invasion film that impressed many, but what’s most impressive is that the little film got director Gareth Edwards a high profiled gig with Legendary Pictures for their proposed Godzilla reboot.
Edwards recently talked to Empire about what his film will be like. “Everyone’s got a very strong opinion about Godzilla and what it should be. The thing that’s so interesting is that Godzilla has evolved since the original one in the ’50s, so there is the opportunity to bring it up to date. But we want to stay true to the fan-base as well and I’m a fan of the Toho films.”
“When I got the call about it from my agent I was in my bedroom and right in front of me by my DVD player was the 1954 GODZILLA. He asked, ‘Are you a fan?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I’m looking at him right now!’ It was incredible.”
Despite the guilty pleasure that was Emmerich’s 1998 Godzilla remake (or Zilla to us fans), I think Edwards has a fighting chance that his version will be honorable to the history, yet updated enough for modern times. Personally, I don’t think he’ll please 100% of all “G” fans, but what do you think?

I don’t think there will ever be a Godzilla film as great as Gojira was. It was more of a horror film than the campy Godzilla: King of the Monsters that turned the film into your average Monster movie. I think the first film was relevant b/c of the time period, and was just one decade after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and audiences were watching a movie about a living nuclear weapon. That’s something that really can’t be recaptured today. Hollywood tried and failed miserably.
I just want to see another good film. The last film, Godzilla: Final Wars, was just an utter disaster of a movie.
