David Goyer goes from Batman to Godzilla

We all have known that the director of the hit indie monster movie, Monsters, Gareth Edwards has been tapped by WB/Legendary Pictures to direct a new American version of Godzilla. Today, Collider has learned that Blade, Batman Begins, and JCVD’s Death Warrant screenwriter David S. Goyer has been hired to do the screenplay.

Of note, in the press release, Legendary proclaims: “intends to approach the film and its characters in the most authentic manner possible.” Seriously? I miss the camp of the films, but remember, the original Japanese version of Godzilla (Gojira) was a rather serious and dark fable, so here’s hoping.

  1. My hope for this film just dropped. Goyer is really hit or miss. Yeah, he worked on the new Batman films, but it was Christopher Nolan’s input that made the film what it was. And that brief description of this reboot just makes my point.

Goyer is hit-or-miss. Batman films were aided by Jon Nolan. Look at Unborn, The Invisible, or Blade: Trinity…yeah, misses.

Totally agree with both of ya.
I do, however, have faith that everyone involved will steer this in the direction of the original 1954 film as mentioned above. Gareth Edwards impressed me with Monsters, I am going to stay as optimistic about this as possible.
Goyer’s misses are pretty bad, but so was the 98′ American train wreck of my favorite childhood monster.

  2. I wouldn’t bank on a short description Matt. With Gareth Edwards directing, who says how much creative adjustments he’ll have… if any. But then again, by saying that, I may very well be shooting myself or all our hopes in the foot… since Edwards only has “MONSTERS” under his belt as being the more successful of his endeavors. OK, fine, let’s hope Goyer has a hit… eh, too hard to call so early.
